Steps and Tools

There are several steps to become a participant as well as tools that you will need to get familiar with in order to participate easily.

Below, you can find more information about each step and tool to understand the study better. This is just for your general understanding of the organization of the study. Once you sign the Informed Consent and get your credentials to log in to Coursesites, our German platform, I will lead you through each step right there.

Step 1: CONSENT

INFORMED CONSENT

Informed Consent is a type of an agreement for you to participate in this study and for me to collect and analyze your information. Signing the Consent automatically enrolls you in this study. However, you can withdraw from the study at any time with no consequences.

After signing the Consent you will receive an email with your study ID and further instructions. Please keep your ID and do not share it with anybody.

One of the most important tools of the study is Emotion Form (EF) that you will fill out for up to 20 times during the two weeks of study. You will receive the EF at random times during your engagement in German activities on Coursesites = your online (or clocked in) time.

You will receive this survey as a text message or email, depending on your preferences, and it is crucial hat you fill it out immediately when you see it.

To be prepared for quick filling out of the survey, practice it HERE. When practicing, enter "testing" as your participant ID.

STEP 2: COURSESITES

GERMAN ACTIVITIES PLATFORM

Blackboard Coursesites is our virtual platform where all activities, tools, tests, and questionnaires, and a more detailed information about the study will be located.

Once you sign the Informed Consent you will be enrolled in the German "course" on Coursesites and will receive an email to finish your registration. Then, you will be able to access the platform at any time. Everything next will happen directly from there!

After signing the Consent and registering for Coursesites you will be asked to fill out the Information and Demographic Questionnaire (IDQ) where you will find questions about your background in German and other languages, your strategies and practices in learning German and some demographic information.
This will help me determine how your previous experiences correlate to your experiences in this study.

If you already signed the Consent and received your participant ID, you may also access and take the IDQ HERE.

Step 3: CLOCKING IN

TIME CLOCK WIZARD

Each time you log in to Coursesites, you will be prompted to clock in before beginning any German activities. Once you finish your activities, you should clock out.

This is for me to measure your overall time spent on different German activities as well as to be able to send you the EF (Emotion Form) while you are engaged in something German.

Once you sign up for the study, you will receive an email with your clock-in information. You may clock in using the Time Clock Wizard website (the link will be always there on Coursesites) or download the app on your phone.

Step 6: GPT

GERMAN PERFORMANCE TEST

After completing the IDQ, your next step will be to take a German Test (GPT) in which you will show me your current, "on the go" skills in German. It is important that you rely only on what you remember or can do spontaneously without using any help or outside resources.

This test is posted on Coursesites and you will take it directly there.
